High-Temperature HEPA Filters: When Cleanrooms Need Them

When hot process air needs a high-temperature HEPA filter instead of a room-temperature HEPA, how SENPEI’s 250 °C and 400 °C series differ in construction, and what to confirm before you enquire.

Hot process air can still require HEPA-class filtration. Ovens, dryers, curing equipment and hot-air supply or exhaust systems may need to control particles without exposing an ordinary room-temperature filter to conditions outside its material limits. In these applications, filtration efficiency alone does not define a suitable filter: the media, separators, frame and sealant must also match the actual service environment.

This guide explains when a high-temperature HEPA filter is appropriate, how SENPEI’s 250 °C and 400 °C series are positioned, and which operating details to include in an enquiry. It is intended to support specification and quotation preparation, not to replace confirmation of the final configuration.

What “high-temperature HEPA” means here

In this guide, high-temperature HEPA refers to a filter panel built for hot-air service using temperature-compatible components throughout its construction. It does not mean simply placing a room-temperature HEPA panel in a hotter housing, nor does it define a universal operating limit for every filter in the series.

SENPEI’s high-temperature HEPA filters are offered in two series:

  • 250 °C series
  • 400 °C series

These are series names used to position the product family. They are not, by themselves, a guaranteed continuous service rating for every size or application. The actual continuous and peak service temperature, temperature-rise profile and exposure duration are confirmed with the quotation.

Both series use the following construction approach:

  • High-temperature ultra-fine glass fibre paper arranged in wedge-shaped pleat layers
  • Aluminium foil separators or corrugated spacers that protect the media from tearing
  • Stainless steel frames
  • High-temperature sealant throughout

This combination addresses the filter as an assembly. The glass fibre media must withstand the process environment, but so must the materials that separate the pleats, support the pack, form the frame and seal the assembly. A suitable selection therefore depends on the complete duty rather than on one temperature reading.

Humidity and airborne chemistry also belong in that assessment. Moisture, process vapours or corrosive constituents at the filter position can affect material selection even where the temperature appears straightforward. State what is actually present in the air stream rather than describing it only as “hot air.”

If the required particle-efficiency terminology is still being defined, the guides to EPA and sub-HEPA filter selection and what EPA filters are provide background on filter classes. For a hot-process enquiry, the buyer should state the required efficiency class explicitly; it should not be inferred from the temperature series.

When a cleanroom actually needs them

A high temperature HEPA filter is relevant when the air requiring filtration remains hot at the filter position, or when the filter is exposed to a defined heating cycle. The important location is the installed filter, not a remote heat source or a temperature measured elsewhere in the process.

Typical applications include:

  • High-temperature ovens, drying and baking equipment in clean production. The filter may be required in a hot-air path serving the process, with the actual cycle and filter location defined by the equipment design.
  • High-temperature coating lines, spray booths and curing ovens. Temperature must be considered together with the chemistry present at the filter, including any process-related vapours or contaminants.
  • Steel, ceramics and glass manufacturing. Hot exhaust or supply air may require filtration, but the buyer must identify the air stream, its continuous and peak conditions, and the intended installation interface.
  • Terminal filtration of hot air. Aerospace, electronics, semiconductor and food plants can have hot-air terminal applications where particle control and temperature-compatible construction must be specified together.

These examples do not mean that every oven or every clean production line needs a high-temperature HEPA. First establish where filtration is required and what conditions reach that point. If the air is cooled before a room-temperature filter, for example, the filter’s actual duty is the conditioned air at its installed position, not the hotter upstream process.

Contrast with room-temperature HEPA filters

Room-temperature product families remain relevant where the process media and installation conditions stay within their confirmed limits. SENPEI’s mini-pleat HEPA filters, gel-seal HEPA filters and aluminium-separator HEPA filters serve different room-temperature construction and installation needs.

Switch to a high-temperature HEPA when the process air or heating cycle exceeds what the ambient product’s media, frame, separators and sealant can tolerate. Those limits must be confirmed for the specific room-temperature product you would otherwise use; there is no single temperature figure in this guide that can be applied to all standard HEPA panels.

The choice should therefore begin with the service environment, not with a preference for a particular pleat style or sealing arrangement. A room-temperature panel should not be assumed suitable because the filter is inside a cleanroom, and a high-temperature panel should not be selected solely because an oven operates nearby.

250 °C vs 400 °C series

Choose between the series by documenting the real duty at the filter position. The principal starting point is the actual continuous air temperature and the peak temperature, but those two values are not enough on their own.

Start with the temperature profile

Record the temperature the filter sees during normal operation and the highest temperature it can see during the process cycle. Also describe how quickly the temperature rises, how long the peak lasts and whether the condition repeats.

A steady operating condition and a short excursion present different specification questions. The 250 °C and 400 °C series names provide a high-level selection route; they do not replace confirmation of continuous service, peak service, temperature rise and duration. SENPEI confirms these details with the quotation for the proposed configuration.

Include humidity and chemistry

Humidity at the filter can matter alongside temperature. Source materials for the 250 °C series mention humidity on the order of about 80%, but this must not be treated as a universal allowance for every configuration. Humidity and chemistry limits are confirmed on quotation.

No equivalent humidity figure is stated here for the 400 °C series. If moisture is present at that filter position, provide the measured or expected condition and request confirmation. Also identify corrosive or otherwise significant process constituents so that the frame, separator and sealant selection can be matched to the actual air temperature and chemistry.

Expect configuration-specific parameters

Both series share the same broad construction platform: stainless steel frames, aluminium foil separators or corrugated spacers, high-temperature sealant and high-temperature glass fibre media. That shared platform does not create a universal size, airflow or pressure-drop table.

Published parameters are not provided as a general W×H×D, airflow and pressure-drop matrix. Frame dimensions, depth, rated airflow and other parameters are confirmed per configuration on quotation. Avoid assigning values from a room-temperature HEPA panel to a hot-process panel without that confirmation.

What to confirm before you enquire

A useful enquiry connects the filter to both the process and the installation. Prepare the following inputs before requesting a configuration:

  • Frame size: required W×H×D in millimetres.
  • Installation interface: the housing or oven port the filter must fit, including the available opening and relevant dimensional details.
  • Continuous temperature: the actual air temperature during normal operation at the filter position.
  • Peak temperature: the maximum condition the filter will experience, with its duration and the temperature-rise profile.
  • Humidity: the measured or expected humidity at the filter position.
  • Air chemistry: relevant process media, corrosive constituents or other conditions affecting material selection.
  • Efficiency class: the required filtration class, stated by the buyer.
  • Rated airflow: the required airflow of the hot air stream.
  • Series preference: 250 °C or 400 °C series, if already identified; otherwise provide the duty for confirmation.
  • Quantity and destination: the number of panels and the destination country or port.

Where a value is not yet known, identify it as pending rather than substituting an assumption. Clear unknowns are easier to resolve than a specification that combines temperatures from different points in the process.

Installation and leak testing

Installation and post-installation leak testing remain with the buyer. SENPEI’s supply scope covers the high-temperature HEPA panels in the confirmed size, depth and temperature class, together with frame, separator and sealant selection matched to the confirmed air temperature and chemistry.

The buyer should therefore arrange installation into the housing or oven port and any required post-installation leak testing through the responsible site or equipment team. Do not assume that on-site hot or ambient leak testing is included with panel supply.

For general removal and replacement planning, use the existing HEPA replacement checklist. The hot-process conditions and installation interface still need to be confirmed for this application.
